Former Hawkeye to Chair Pawlenty CommitteePosted: May 23, 2011
Former Hawkeye Matt Whitaker has been named chairman of Tim Pawlenty’s Iowa campaign steering committee.
Pawlenty, the former Governor of Minnesota, officially announced Monday that he would seek the Republican nomination for President in the 2012 election.
Whitaker played tight end for the Hawkeyes from 1989 to 1992 and was a member of the 1990 Big Ten Championship squad. He caught 21 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns during his Iowa career.
Since his days wearing the Black and Gold, Whitaker has served as U.S. attorney for the Southern district of Iowa and now works in a private law practice in Des Moines.
“Matt Whitaker is a man who knows what’s important and he gets things done,” Pawlenty said in an article in The Des Moines Register. “That’s been true from his days as a member of the Iowa Hawkeyes team that played in the Rose Bowl to his determination as a U.S. attorney who prosecuted dangerous criminals and put them behind bars. Iowans know and respect Matt Whitaker. We’re very happy and blessed to have him on our team.”
